Interdependence

Yesterday I talked about how every person wants results and how every gym sells them. How each gym guides you to those results differ, however.

In order to help you decide on which gym you should belong to, I broke your gym options into three categories: commercial, franchised, and coaching. Yesterday’s blog was focused on the gyms.

Today I’d like to use the same format, but now turn the focus on you. These gyms market to specific people that have a specific mentality.

Independence-Dependence-Interdependence

Commercial, franchised, and coaching gyms attract clients with three mentalities: independent, dependent, and interdependent.

Independent

The independent client is best described as the high-school sports captain. They had success early in their life in regards to fitness and feel like they can go the distance on their own. They like doing things their own way, so they will write their own workouts or pull them from internet resources like bodybuilding.com.

They depend on internal motivators like will-power in order to achieve results.

They do best if no one gets involved.

Self-discipline is the defining characteristic of the independent client.

Dependent

The dependent client is best described as the inexperienced — if they walk into a gym, they are totally lost. They recognize that they won’t push themselves unless they have someone next to them. They don’t like doing things on their own, so they require others to write the workout plans for them.

They depend on external motivators in order to achieve results.

They do best if a trainer or instructor is with them every step of the workout.

Humility is the defining characteristic of the dependent client.

Interdependent

The interdependent client is someone who recognizes that success is never achieved alone. They recognize that results always start and end with their own effort, but trainers and “teammates” will push them to limits they couldn’t achieve on their own. They are a hybrid of both independent and dependent mindsets.

They depend on inspiration, both internal and external motivators, in order to achieve results.

They do best if they put together a plan with a coach and then are held accountable to that plan. That plan might include daily workouts with a trainer and group. It might also include doing workouts on their own every morning.

Virtuosity is the defining characteristic of the interdependent client.

RxFIT

Commercial gyms attract independent clients. They market to the individuals that want to do things their way. This is why many of them are open for 24 hours a day and they have many different pieces of workout equipment.

Franchised gyms attract dependent clients. They market to the individuals that want to be told exactly want to do. This is why they are only open during certain hours of the day and only have certain pieces of equipment.

Coaching gyms attract interdependent clients. They market to the individuals that want to be educated on what to do and how to do it. This is why they meet regularly one-on-one with their clients and then prescribe the best path forward. Sometimes that plan might include going to a commercial gym or franchised gym.

RxFIT is a coaching gym. We attract interdependent clients. We want you to be informed and educated about your plan. We want to be involved with your goals and hold you accountable to the plan. We believe success is a team effort — a yoked coach-athlete relationship.

Takeaway

What best describes you? Would you like your fitness journey to be independent, dependent, or interdependent?

If you want to do things your way, join a commercial gym.

If you want to do things someone else’s way, join a franchised gym.

If you want to do things together, join a coaching gym.
